Decolonizing the Syllabus (2022) is a Master's thesis project that focuses on a sample of 38 course syllabi of Northeastern University’s graduate English Program from Spring 2016 to Fall 2021.

This project was added to NUWPArc by the author who was a Research Assistant on this project at the time she completed her thesis.

As learners of language and writing, are we talking to the communities we study or are we subjectivizing them instead of giving them agency? Are we giving them the metaphorical mic to present and participate in the discourse? Are we talking to them or just about them? These are some of the questions that led to the creation of this project.

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Gain more information about where the course fits in wider categories
  • Provide more information about the authors of assigned readings
  • Understand the level of diversity among the authors of the assigned readings
  • Analyze how the readings may have changed over the years
  • Create a bibliography of readings by people from marginalized communities
